Last Wednesday's blackout by Wikipedia, Reddit and other sites raised awareness of PIPA and SOPA but there's another threat to the open Internet, ACTA and has already been signed in US and elsewhere. There has been jubilation about the fact that both the PIPA and SOPA bills that were being debated by the US Congress have stopped being an immediate menace. Yes the action taken by Wikipedia had the desired effect, as did the signatures of the citizens who petitioned President Obama. However, in reality we should view the outcome as a temporary setback for the supporters of this legislation. They will no doubt try again and we just have to hope that the next proposed legislation is less draconian. The lasting achievement of the Internet Strike was that it alerted ordinary Internet users to the idea that there are freedoms we currently take for granted that could be blocked with widespread adverse affects. But while many more people now know about SOPA and PIPA, how many have heard of ACTA - which by having the status of an international trade agreement rather than one country's law has been introduced without the level of debate accorded to proposed legislation? According to La Quadrature du Net, a French advocacy group that promotes the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet: ACTA is one more offensive against the sharing of culture on the Internet. ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is an agreement secretly negotiated by a small "club" of like-minded countries (39 countries, including the 27 of the European Union, the United States, Japan, etc). Negotiated instead of being democratically debated, ACTA bypasses parliaments and international organizations to dictate a repressive logic dictated by the entertainment industries. La Quadrature says ACTA aims at imposing new criminal sanctions and online censorship in the name of copyright. The US, Canada and many other countries have already signed the ACTA agreement and it was recently adopted by the European Union but it has yet to be debated by the European Parliament and so there is still a short window for protest against ACTA to prevent it being enacted. Apple last Thursday, showed off digital textbooks at its education event in New York. The service, dubbed iBooks 2, will allow textbook makers to create fully interactive titles for Apple's iPad. According to the company, users will be able to swipe across the display to open textbook pages and view movies within each chapter. The operating system's familiar pinch and tapping features are also available, giving users more interaction with titles. It's the interactivity that Apple was focused on. The company says that kids will be able to see 3D images and rotate them to get a better feel for what, for example a DNA structure looks like. The books can also be switched between portrait mode and landscape modes to make text and images easier to interact with. As with traditional textbooks, students can be able to easily mark up titles from the iPad. Kids can also highlight text and add a note to a page. All those notes can then be combined to make study cards. Those cards, which are basically virtual 3-by-5-inch cards, let students put a topic on one side and the definition on the other, similar to flash cards.
Apple has already formed partnerships with a host of major textbook makers, including Pearson, McGraw Hill, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. According to Apple, those companies are responsible for 90 percent of all textbooks in the U.S. To spur people to develop textbooks, Apple has launched a new application. Dubbed iBooks Author, the free Mac OS X application lets authors create both textbooks and books. The application includes templates to quickly create books, but users can also drag and drop images and video into the title. To add text, Apple lets users drag and drop a Word file from Finder into a chapter. The application then automatically creates sections and headers. According to Apple, iBooks 2 is an application that's downloaded from the App Store to the iPad for free. The textbooks themselves are priced at $14.99 or less, Apple says, and once purchased, the textbooks can be redownloaded at no additional charge. A textbook section has also been added to the iBooks store.Textbooks focusing on science, math, and other disciplines are currently being offered. Google's Android will become the preeminent platform for developers over the next 12 months, edging ahead of Apple's iOS, according to a study by research firm Ovum. Nearly all developers, however, will support both platforms. Ovum's call comes as Android continues to suck up market share, with more companies using the platform to crank out a wave of mobile devices. While iOS has seen its market share growth slow in the recent years, it has always been seen as a more lucrative location for developers to make money. As a result, most apps came to iOS first, and the other platforms second. That, however, could all change in the coming months, Ovum said. Android's prevalence is getting hard to ignore, and developers have incorporated new business models such as advertising and in-app purchases to spur revenue. Ovum also said there is growing developer interest in Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS. The results come as both Microsoft and Research in Motion attempt to woo developers over to their respective camps. "The growing momentum behind Windows Phone indicates that Microsoft has managed to convince developers that its platform is worthy of investment; its challenge now is to persuade consumers," said Ovum analyst Adam Leach. The study also said developers are abandoning mobile-centric development tools such as Java, Flash and WAP, and moving to HTML5, a Web-based standard that can run across multiple devices and platforms. Happy techiness written by Aditya Toraskar for Ecs Elite Co I think we all have those mobile battery chargers for our cellular phone, incase we need that extra bit of juice. The real problem is that you have got to remember to charge such devices, or you will really get screwed when you need them at the most.
What if you had a battery that is powered on nothing but ordinary water ? Yes, you read it right.!! It is now named the Powertrekk, and it uses the fuel-cell technology to convert hydrogen gas into electricity. The secret behind this technology is a thing inside the powertrekk known as Powertrekk Puck which holds the water and carries out the fuel based charge. The Powertrekk is designed for USB powered devices, and you can use your USB charger on your mobile device for aiding in the charge. The Powertrekk might be the answer to that age-old question for what you would have if you lived on a deserted island. Considering that one don't need any sun or outlet, it is sure to get the vote of all because for all one would need is a teaspoon of water that surrounds the island. Ofcourse one will pay for this type of power to the tune of, $300 which always has to be a good deal. HOW TO LOCK YOUR
