THAILAND FLOOD AFFECTED MICROSOFT *Flooding in Thailand will dampen Microsofts results..... The Thailand flooding results at the software giant will lekely be hampered by hard drive component constraints that have hit the PC business. At the Nomura Technology Conference held last week the company expects fourth quarter PC shipments to drop and the research company said that even though PC market growth is healthy, the fourth quarter had unusually weak holiday demand. Microsoft predicted statics would show lower PC sales in the fourth quarter because of flodding in Thailand. However, Gartner analysts say that Hard disk drive shortages sparked by the floods had little impact on fourth quarter PC shipments and prices. Analyst wanred, though, that the flooding could cause a major shortage in the first half of 2012 and potentially continue throughout the year. The pc shipments for the whole of 2012 are now expected to expand by only "6.8" percent in 2012,down from the previous outlook of "9.5" percent growth. As the numbers came out, you'll likely see that number decline further, as the impact has been felt faster tha people had anticipated, Intel warned in December that, largely due to the HDD shortage caused by flooding in Thailnad. Might Not Know Mastering the keyboard will not only increase your navigation speed but it can also help with wrist fatigue. Here are some lesser known Windows shortcuts to help you become a keyboard ninja. Global Windows Shortcuts Win+1, 2, 3, 4, etc. will launch each progr am in your taskbar. It is helpful then to keep your most used programs at the beginning of your task bar so you can open them one r ight after another. This also works in Windows Vista for the quick launch icons. Win+Alt+1, 2, 3, etc. will open the jump list for each program in the taskbar. You can then use your arrows to select which jump list option you want to open. Win+T will cycle through taskbar programs. This is similar to just hover ing over the item with your mouse but you can launch the program with Space or Enter. Win+Home minimizes all programs except current the window selects the system tray which isn’t always useful but can come in ver y handy if your Win+B mouse stops working . Win+Up/Down maximizes and restores down the current window so long as that window has the option to be maximized. It is exactly the same as clicking on the middle button on your windows. Alt+Esc is like Alt+Tab but switches windows in the order they were opened and does not have the fancy window preview overlay. Win+Pause/Break will open your system properties window. This can be helpful if you need to see the name of a computer or simple system statistics. Ctrl+Esc can be used to open the start menu but will not work as a Windows key replacement for other shortcuts. Ctrl+Shift +Esc will open the task manager without needing to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del first. Alt+Space will open the window system menu which can be used to maximize (x), minimize (n), close (c), or move (m) the window which can be especially helpful if your window is somehow off-screen. This shortcut can also be helpful with windows that don’t close with the lt+F4 shortcut such as the command window. Windows Explorer Shortcuts Here are handy shortcuts built into Windows Explorer which may have similar features in other programs too. Alt+Up will navigate up one folder level since the up arrow on the menu bar was removed in Windows Vista. Alternatively, you can also make Backspace go up one folder level with a handy AutoHotKey script. opens the contextual or “right click” menu for a file/folder. This can be very handy Shift+F10 for speed especially if you know which option you want to select. Look for an underlined letter in each option to know which letter you can press for faster access. Shift+Del deletes a file without sending it to the recycle bin because who wants to empty their recycle bin anyway? Ctrl+Shift +N creates a new folder in your current directory. Alt+Enter opens the file properties so you can view file size, shar ing settings, and creation date. F2 renames a file or folder. F3 will open explorer and select the search bar. If you already have an explorer window open it will highlight the search bar. In some programs it will also open the search dialog to search within that program. F6 cycles objects in the current window. In explorer this will cycle between the location bar, options bar, left pane, and r ight pane. It also works with varying success in other programs. F10 toggles the file menu in explorer _ Timeline apps (also known as Open Graph apps) allow brands to add real-world interactions to their applications. Spotify was one of the first companies to release a Timeline app, letting users share what they are listening to with their Facebook friends in real time.
For example as a user listens to a song on Spotify, the activity appears as, "Sakshi S Tanver is listening to July by Youth Lagoon on Spotify" on Facebook. With tonight's announcement of more than 60 new Timeline apps, users can expect to see more actions beyond listening, like "reading," "watching," "cooking," and "running". These apps--which include popular names like IMDB, GoodReads, RunKeeper, and StubHub!--will likely increase engagement for brands who want (arguably more than anything) to penetrate the real lives of users, many of whom strongly identify with their Facebook profiles. But before you add these attractive new apps, consider the way Open Graph works and how exactly it will affect your Facebook experience. 1. Beware of "frictionless sharing." A term originally coined at F8, "frictionless sharing" is the new permissions protocol, which says that apps only need initial approval to post activities on your behalf. Once you install the app and authorize it to post stories on your profile and News Feed, it'll never ask for your permission again. Pausing and resuming activity-sharing for any given app will depend on the app developer (like Spotify's "private listening"), but you do have ongoing control over which audiences see these activities. Be sure to select which friends you'd like to share with when installing an app. 2. Your activity will be seen everywhere. With Open Graph, app activities will now appear in the News Feed, Ticker, and on your Facebook profile. Why? Facebook hopes that by sharing your activity everywhere, your friends will be more likely to install apps you're using, further helping brands increase awareness. In the example below, a user installs a recipe app and his or her recipe activities are shared across the Facebook platform. (Credit: Facebook Developers) 3. Your Timeline might not appear in chronological order. Graph Rank, the algorithm that decides which posts are deemed "Top Stories" will also affect your Timeline. BetaBeat reports that "...things are laid out by year and by month. But, when it comes to what's displayed to your social circle at any given time, other metrics, including direct payments to Facebook itself, will now influence the ranking and placement of stories." This means that even if your most recent activity was a status update, your jog on the RunKeeper Timeline app might appear above it. The exact placement of activities on your Timeline are dynamic and will shift depending on who visits your Timeline, and (possibly) if Facebook is profiting off that activity. 4. Consider organizing your friends into Lists. Because the new Timeline apps use "frictionless sharing," your highest level of security against oversharing will be audience selection. As previously mentioned, you will have the opportunity to select an audience with which to share your activity upon the initial installation of an app (see photo below). In the drop-down list, under "Custom," you'll see your friend lists. Use the drop-down menu to select a List. (Credit: Screenshot by Sharon Vaknin/CNET) By using lists, you'll have better control of who exactly will see your activity for Timeline apps. For example, you may only want to share events you're attending via StubHub with close friends, but recipes you're cooking via Foodily with your foodie friends. 5. You can always revoke an app's permissions. If you decide you no longer want to use an app or want to change its sharing settings, you may do so at any time. Head to the App Settings page and click the "x" next to the app to delete it, or click "Edit" to change the audience selection. Wikipedia, Reddit, BoingBoing and many other sites went dark Jan. 17, at 9 p.m. to bring public attention to the PROTECT IP Act and Stop Online Piracy Act, bills currently moving towards United States Congress. The bills were drafted with the intention of helping crack down on internet piracy and blocking sites that may have material that infringe on copyright laws. If passed, it would give the U.S. Department of Justice the ability to shut down sites indefinitely without a hearing of any sort. The bills would crack down on sites that have digital copies of counterfeit material or anti-digital rights management programs. Since many of these sites are foreign and not within the DoJ’s jurisdiction, the bill would allow the department to simply block access to the sites. Many websites, and some major web development companies like Google, are outraged by the provisions within the proposal, stating that it sets a dangerous paradigm when they can be blocked without due process. According to Wikipedia, the bill would force sites to monitor all content that users post for copyright infringement. The sheer volume of web traffic to some of these sites make such a task impossible. The show their disapproval, Wikipedia decided to shut down the english portion of the site for 24 hours and replace it with a page that raises awareness for SOPA and PIPA. Many other sites have followed suit and have gone dark as well. Google, while not shutting down, is showing solidarity by linking anti-SOPA material on their homepage.
